Hi, I’m Hakyoung, but you can also call me Rachel. I was born in Seoul, South Korea, and spent parts of my early childhood and adulthood in the U.S. before returning to Seoul. Living between cultures gave me firsthand insight into the emotional complexities of adapting to change, whether it’s moving abroad, returning home, or simply stepping into a new chapter of life. These experiences shape how I support clients through personal, professional, and cross-cultural transitions, helping them process change as they navigate their new reality.

Before training as a therapist, I spent over 15 years teaching English in South Korea, where I worked primarily with corporate executives as well as professionals across different fields. This work gave me a deeper understanding of the pressures people face in demanding roles, including leadership, decision-making, and work-life balance, which are the areas that I naturally became drawn to in my clinical work.

Through my own transitions and years of working closely with professionals across diverse fields, I have gained valuable insight into how people navigate change, manage expectations, and overcome challenges in both life and work. Now, as a provisionally licensed therapist in Illinois (Licensed Professional Counselor, LPC), I am drawing on my past experiences while advancing my expertise through formal clinical training and working toward independent licensure as a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC).

CLINICAL APPROACH

As a therapist-in-training, I am committed to continuous learning under supervision while creating a compassionate and non-judgmental space for my clients. I take an integrative approach, tailoring various evidence-based methods to best support each client’s unique needs. Rather than a one-size-fits-all model, I strive to be flexible and collaborative, meeting you where you are and working together in a way that feels meaningful and effective.

I am particularly drawn to Person-Centered Therapy, as I believe healing begins with feeling truly seen, heard, and accepted without conditions or judgment. My role is to provide a space where you can explore your thoughts and experiences at your own pace with warmth and trust.

I also incorporate Narrative Therapy, helping you explore and reshape the stories you tell about yourself to foster empowerment and resilience. As you shift your perspective, you can begin to step away from limiting self-beliefs and recognize the strengths that have always been within you. Additionally, I use principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to support you in identifying thought patterns that may contribute to stress or anxiety, while equipping you with practical tools for change. My goal is to ensure therapy feels both validating and actionable, helping you gain insight while also developing strategies to navigate life’s challenges with greater confidence.

In addition, my graduate studies provided me with a strong foundation in Christian counseling, equipping me to support clients who wish to integrate their faith into their healing journey. Whether faith is a central part of your healing process or something you are exploring, I strive to honor and respect what is meaningful to you.

Above all, I believe that therapy should be a place where you feel completely safe, understood, and accepted just as you are. Whether you’re navigating a major life change or working through emotional challenges, my goal is to provide unwavering support and practical guidance, helping you move toward lasting healing and a sense of wholeness.
