Stepping Into The New Season With Gratitude
Written by lexi ruiz
November is here and I am reminded to shift my mindset in a more positive approach this season. It’s around this time that I get overwhelmed by feeling that I haven't accomplished as much as I had envisioned or repeatedly get caught up in the things that go wrong or just get stuck with the winter blues. I forget to slow down and acknowledge all good things that have happened in the past year. If you resonate with any of these feelings, maybe we can both benefit from some reflective gratitude.
Gratitude is the affirmation of goodness coming from outside sources. We often adapt to the good in our lives and that leaves us taking for granted the goodness of simple things – like having your favorite warm drink on a chilly morning or meeting a friend for dinner. Thankfully, the practice of gratitude can be developed. Plus, it’s a skill that actually increases our happiness meter!
There are endless ways to practice gratitude, but I personally like to use a journal because it forces my mind to slow down and think about how I want to express myself. There’s no right or wrong way to keep a gratitude journal, but with the guidance from the psychologist authors of The Gratitude Project, you can begin your own journal with the following exercise! They suggest starting your gratitude practice with Three Good Things. Basically, for the duration of a week, write down three things that went well and include detailed explanations for why they went well. If you’re having trouble starting, instead of thinking about good experiences happening around you, try to think about what life would be like without certain things. I also highly suggest designating a specific time to do this exercise for a smooth transition into this new mindful habit.
However, if you’re too busy to journal, try a mini five-minute meditation that can be done anywhere. The key is to savor the goodness of the moment. Do this by tapping into your senses to fully enjoy its goodness and taking deep breaths to ground yourself into the present moment. Once you’re finished and you’re sitting with a lighter, fuller heart, don’t forget to take it along with you in your day and even pass it onto those around you. We hope you can give these a try and feel lighter and full of happiness!
